The unrealistic portrayal of women in popular culture is one perfect example of dumbing down the masses. Women’s body image in the media follows a specific standard that is being followed by so many women, young and old, these days.

The unrealistic portrayal of women in popular culture may offer beauty and perfection but this is fake. Even if these images are considered fake, it is quite disturbing how many women still adhere to the standards set by the media. The problems that arise from the unrealistic portrayal of women in popular culture are really serious and alarming ones that really affect women psychologically like eating disorders, depression, obesity and many other psychological disorders. Women in popular culture have distorted images and low self-image. These are the images people see everyday from fashion magazines, television ads and even in television sitcoms and movies. They depict women as sexual objects in art. Women are damsels in distress, sex kittens or devious witches who are obviously underweight, beautiful and sexy while when a woman is overweight, she is often the subject of ridicule. This definitely shows the unrealistic portrayal of women in popular culture which undermines so many of the normal women because of the “ideal” female form being promoted.

One of the major disparities that everyone sees in the workplace is gender. Man and woman in the workplace alone uncover so many differences that have been pointed out ages ago.
